CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Sigurd Olstadt (goes by Nökkvason)
CANON: Axis Powers Hetalia
CANON REFERENCE: Wikipedia
AGE: 18 years.
GENDER: Male, physically and otherwise.
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: HS4.
APPEARANCE: Pictured second from the right.
Sigurd is of fairly average height with a relatively slight build. The only noticeable/major difference between his design in the Hetalia canon and his AU design is the lack of floating hair curl in the latter. His mutant powers have absolutely nothing to do with floating hair curls.
PERSONALITY: Sigurd is quiet, stoic, and absolutely straightforward. He won't mince words with you, nor spare your feelings if something needs saying. In many cases, he won't speak at all, choosing to do so when it suits him for the most part. As one might suspect, he's rather pragmatic, a realist in the purest sense. Things are how they are, that's all there is to it. He won't deny the existence of something unlikely simply because it's unrealistic according to popular opinion. In fact, while remaining very much a realist, there are certain ways in which one could say that Sigurd indulges in things that seem quite unrealistic or fanciful. At no point will he deny the existence of magic, for example. Also, despite evidence to the contrary, he seems to have conjured up a mental image of his little brother's opinion of him which seems to be quite unsubstantiated (he'd very much like to believe that Ari is very fond of him and looks up to him without hesitation, very possibly worshipping the ground his big brother walks on; in reality, this just doesn't seem to be true).
These things aside, it's his overall approach to life and daily situations that leads one to the conclusion that this young man is certainly a realist, certainly a pragmatist, and almost certainly neither overtly optimistic nor pessimistic, if his demeanor is anything to go by. He seems to walk in the middle of the road, so to speak. He'll keep his head down nine times out of ten, only showing a more passionate or emotive side when those he cares about are concerned. If someone he loves is threatened - and that is a very short list of people - then there are essentially no lengths to which he would not go to protect or defend them. If they are harmed, he will exact revenge in one form or another and he will do it quickly and without mercy.
Where money is concerned, Sigurd is frugal, almost to extremes. He's also very good at managing things as a consequence, so it's not only money matters in which he's prudent. He's also fairly savvy when it comes to the use of other resources as well, be they material or otherwise. In that way, he can be regarded as somewhat cunning, although it's not often he finds obvious ways to apply himself in this manner. Again, for the most part, he will take the path of least resistance, simply because it's practical to do so. When presented with an obstacle, it's handled efficiently, without an excess of emotion - save for those times when it involves someone he cares for, particularly and noticeably in the case of his brother.
Even then, he doesn't express much. Those who don't know him well might assume he's not very emotional, or might go so far as to call him robotic. It's not a lack of emotion, however, that causes this impression to be struck. It is, like so many things in his life, simply an economy of emotion that motivates his quiet attitude and oftentimes deadpan expression. He can't be said to be totally without mischief though, because he will on rare occasions use this to his advantage, usually by saying something outrageous in the same, calm tone of voice he always uses when communicating with others. This doesn't happen very often though.
He's neither leader nor follower, lacking the outward charisma to lead and possessing too much independence to follow. He'd rather blaze his own trail, as it were, and attempts to alter it may meet with spectacular failure, as once he's set his mind to something, he rarely gives up or changes course in the middle. This goes directly back to his pragmatic outlook on things. While it make take time to decide the correct course of action, he doesn't set out to achieve something unless he's certain he's going about it correctly. It can be difficult to convince him of anything to the contrary, for this reason.
In summary, he's a quiet, but straightforward person who has a realist's outlook on life. He's frugal and discerning when it comes to managing resources, but prone to strong (but not obvious) emotion when those he loves are in any kind of compromised position. It's difficult to read his emotions on his face, but you won't have to often, because he'll easily say what's on his mind - from time to time in such a way that it seems to be explicitly for his own amusement. All this said, there's nothing about him that is overtly cruel and he doesn't seek to trod upon others. Sigurd's content to go his own way, as a rule, so long as you let him do just that.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Sigurd's power is nature manipulation. As per the superpower wikia, this implies the ability to "communicate with and command earth's environment psychically," though Sigurd's ability does not entail any implication of "command" over nature. He merely has the ability to communicate with and 'encourage' (as it were) certain natural phenomena. In other words, his will has no power to make a plant grow at an increased rate, but he can communicate on a psychic level with a plant to persuade such growth through unnatural means. This applies to all non-sentient beings in the biosphere and implies no level of communication with animals.
His degree of control over these abilities was initially extremely tenuous and incidents were highly sporadic, but after years of practice, it's something he can do with fairly minimal repercussions, so long as it isn't over an extended period of time or area. It sometimes happens by accident when he's in a heightened emotional state of some sort.
Additionally, it's much easier for him to communicate with more 'complex' organisms than it is simpler ones. However, it's also more difficult to cause a larger organism to move or grow at will. In other words, it would be more difficult to "talk" to a micro-organism in the soil than it would a small shrub and it would be easier to have a flower bloom than it would to cause leaves to appear on a tree.
AU HISTORY: Born in Norway to a pair of "artists" - though having always doubted the validity of such a term where his parents were concerned - Sigurd was raised for the first year of his life in Oslo. Once he was born, his mother decided that she needed a steadier source of income and put herself through an interior design program. His father saw this as a betrayal of their lifestyle, of their love - not to mention art itself! - and shortly after disappeared to parts unknown, leaving both mother and child behind. Following this, his mother made the choice to relocate herself and her son across the water to Iceland. It's here that she met Ari's father and Ari was born. Sigurd, having been mostly alone for the first few years of his life, became very attached to his little brother and despite having questions from the first home he and his mother knew together, he quickly came to love Iceland and living there. Despite this, and although they live together happily with Ari and his father in Iceland for a number of years, Sigurd's mother often revisited Norway, either out of a desire to help Sigurd grow up knowing his homeland or because she herself was homesick for it.
When the family did migrate together, it wasn't to Norway, however. Sigurd was nine and his little brother six when all four moved to a small town in Denmark, where father and mother opened a furniture business with an old friend of Ari's father. Ari and Sigurd became fast friends with the man's son, Vilmar, and they were nearly inseparable from that time onward. In addition, Sigurd became acquainted with Vilmar's half-brother, Björn, around this time.
Perhaps because Sigurd was Vilmar's age and perhaps because Sigurd wasn't quite so extroverted where Vilmar was, making them quite the interesting pair, they quickly formed a (rather strange, but workable) friendship, with Ari included in their adventures partly as a matter of insistence on Sigurd's part. He wanted to be able to keep an eye on little brother as much as possible, having fostered an intense protective instinct towards Ari ever since they were both very young.
By this point, Sigurd was old enough that he accepted - on some level - that his birth father wasn't coming back, and having been raised by Ari's father, he recognized the man to be his own father as well. In addition, he had become quite accustomed to moving around a lot, having "homes" here and there where he didn't live for long periods of time.
And yet, with a business to run, it seemed that Sigurd's family may have settled down for good. It's around this time that Sigurd's abilities started to become more manifest, having been almost incidental in nature before he turned nine or ten. The odd plant in the window box would suddenly bloom overnight - in the middle of winter, mind you - or the grass would need cutting far too often to be normal. Unaware that he was the cause, Sigurd went on with his routine as usual. It was only after a fight with his mother that ended in red clover taking over the entire yard that both Sigurd and his mother had to address the possibility that he was the source of their unnaturally productive garden.
Sigurd insisted that nothing needed to be done. Practically speaking, it wasn't a dangerous mutation. Even when out of control, it did little more than beautify their lawn. Possibly at a loss because of the pragmatic way that Sigurd presented this argument, and after much discussion, his parents agreed to leave it be for the time being. Several years passed without any real incident, until one morning the family awoke to find a fully-grown tree in the front yard, where there had been none the night before. Sigurd refused to explain it, but something that noticeable required some extra attention. It would take more than promises to keep his abilities secret this time.
Now that both his mother and father were aware of what was going on, they both took to seeking out some sort of solution. It would be several years before one presented itself, and in the meantime, Sigurd was instructed to be as discreet as possible about his abilities. Despite his best attempts to do so, it would have been impossible to keep what he could do a secret from both Ari and Vilmar. Sharing his own powers with Ari brought about revelations of Ari's gift of communication with nature and, similarly with Vilmar, his best friend's powers as well. Feeling that this was certain to bring them all closer together, particularly to mend the distance that had grown between himself and Ari in the past several years, Sigurd considered the revelation to be positive.
When no such thing happened, he grew disheartened, but strove to keep this a secret from his family. As a result, his powers grew more unstable for a time, to a point where it as difficult to deny their potential dangers. Flowers springing up where they oughtn't is one thing, but the sudden invasion of tree branches into rooms of the house, roots nearly coming through the floorboards... that was something else entirely.
Luckily, around this time, Sigurd's parents were made aware of The Institute. Sigurd himself wasn't overly thrilled about the idea of going overseas, but he told himself that as long as he got to stay with Ari, it would be okay and he promised himself to make the best of it with that in mind. For this reason, he implored his parents to allow Ari to come along, which may have indirectly contributed to their discovery of their second son's special "ability."
From here, arrangements were made and both boys, along with Vilmar, were sent to the Xavier Institute of Higher Learning.
